Thermal performance of urban trees
An exciting post-doc research position has become available for an enthusiastic and ambitious candidate to join a team in urban green space research at the University of Reading. The candidate will benefit from being within a wider academic community carrying out vibrant and well-resourced programs of studies into urban ecology, urban climate and sustainable buildings.
This project will be a valuable opportunity for gaining new and in-depth understanding of urban tree – built environment interactions. It will be carried out in the context of prevention of summer overheating and creation of comfortable outdoor and indoor living environments for city dweller. Particular attention will be paid to how trees and buildings interact with solar radiation in both visible and infrared ranges.
We are keen that the project will provide new and useful guidance to building, landscape and urban designers and planners for effective integration of trees in cities, supporting the practitioners in a range of decisions including tree species selection, tree arrangement, and appropriate urban forms.
- Measurement of thermal performance of urban trees in the visible, near and mid IR bands of the solar radiation.
- Evaluation of built surface/form and tree form influences
- Selection of appropriate tree species and urban sites
- Procure, install and test monitoring equipment
- Preparation of conference and journal research outputs
- Inform and engage users and make a difference to urban green space design
- Ability to work with experimental equipment and data analysis tools
- Excellent communication skills
- Willingness to engage users, including through online tools
- Postgraduate research experience in built environment, trees/green infrastructure or a related field
- Doctorate in a relevant specialism or comparable attainment
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Record of publications commensurate with career stage.
